What goes into preserving our 180 year old building?

Maintenance projects, both large and small, are ongoing and range from snowplowing and landscaping to major capital improvements. Projects over the past 15 years have included replacing our magnificent Greek Revival front columns and porch; improving parking lot safety with the addition of a landscaped island that directs traffic entry and exit more effectively; installing new energy efficient LED lighting throughout the building; installing FIOS for the Post Office; stripping and refinishing all the old-growth fir interior doors; weatherizing the basement, including the installation of a french drain; repairing the side porch; installing required handrails at the main entrance; refinishing scuffed fir floors; clearing out the attic; interior painting; installation of a new fire reporting system that’s connected directly by radio to our town’s fire station; repainting the parking lot to further improve traffic flow; installing a new, energy-efficient air conditioning system; installing new gutters and down spouts; installing new historically appropriate screen doors; insulating pipes; repairing windows; exterior painting and rot repair; roof replacement; replacing an old boiler with a more energy efficient model; removing old oil tanks; installing water-efficient toilets and smart thermostats; making electrical repairs from lightening strike damage and carpentry repairs from ice damage; ongoing stone wall maintenance; planting of trees and perennials; and ongoing weeding, mowing, snow plowing, Spring and Fall clean ups, and contracting trash removal.

The result of these labors is a beautiful, unique town landmark and gathering place, where small town exchanges play out, adding richness and a sense of connection in the community. The Old Town Hall is not maintained by tax dollars or CPA funds—rather, its care is entrusted to the Lincoln Old Town Hall Corporation, an entirely volunteer-run, non-profit organization. The building’s preservation depends upon generous donations and volunteer support. Please be part of its future by contributing today.

The Old Town Hall Exchange receives anniversary recognition

Stacy Osur attended the Annual Federation of Woman’s Exchanges meeting in May of 2018 in Dedham MA. The Lincoln Old Town Hall Exchange was honored for 55 consecutive years of volunteering and continuing the rich history of Woman’s Exchanges. The Federation is currently comprised of 20 gift stores across the country, dedicated since 1832 to handcrafted items from the US and beyond. Would you like to volunteer too? The Lincoln Old Town Hall is a living piece of history

The Old Town Hall is one of the most visible and significant historic landmarks in Lincoln. A graceful example of Greek Revival architecture, the Old Town Hall is as vital and relevant now as it was 170 years ago, hosting the comings and goings of daily life in our New England town.

The Old Town Hall is not maintained by or run by tax dollars—rather, the care of this town hub is entrusted to the Lincoln Old Town Hall Corporation, an entirely volunteer-run non-profit organization. The building’s preservation depends upon the ongoing generosity of those who recognize that this building is the physical center of the spirit that is Lincoln.

It also provides the setting where the tangible and intangible exchanges of small town life continue to play out in real time and space. It's a place where a young child can experience the worth of a quarter by breaking it down into penny candy from The Exchange. It's a place where paths cross by chance at the post office and where notices flutter with immediacy on the foyer’s community bulletin board. Modern times and technology can habituate folks to virtual exchanges, and rarer become the days of the handshake, the frank glance, and the varied textures of life: local hand crafts, homemade cookies, and the creak of old floorboards. In fulfilling our mission to maintain the Old Town Hall, so too is a spirit of community sustained.

Please join in the continued effort to preserve the Old Town Hall by contributing to our Annual Appeal, by volunteering, and by visiting often. Thank you!

The Lincoln Old Town Hall Corporation Celebrates its 50th Anniversary!

On Thursday, May 2, 2013, fifty members of The Lincoln Old Town Hall Corporation gathered to toast its Golden Jubilee. The event provided an opportunity to  express thanks for the vision and community spirit that brought 18 Lincoln residents together back in 1962 to purchase and preserve this stately antique building and its adjoining land for the future benefit of Lincoln residents. The care and keeping of The Lincoln Old Town Hall has been a community effort over the years, and  stories were shared of many people who recognized the role it plays in maintaining Lincoln's historic, small town character and have generously given their time, talent and treasure to the building's continued well being. The outdoor reception included refreshments and hors d'oeuvres along with toasts and much merriment as friends and neighbors reminisced in the warm glow of good feeling and fellowship (despite a rather brisk spring breeze!). Hearty New Englanders, one and all!

The work of maintaining our historic building is an ongoing labor of love

2012 is a big year, as we replace the bases of our majestic columns and paint the exterior. Though the Lincoln Old Town Hall exists for the benefit of the town, it receives no tax dollars for its care and keeping. Please consider a donation to the Lincoln Old Town Hall Corporation so that this living piece of Lincoln’s history can remain vital and strong! Click to contribute today!
